Owen Injured whilst playing Sweden

Michael Owen has been injured in the first minute in the World Cup 2006 Group Stage match against Sweden.

It looks to be a ligament injury, it is unlikely that he will play again in this World Cup.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has said that the injury "does not look good". The English Football Association say that Michael Owen has twisted his knee and the injury will be scanned on Wednesday.

Micahel was replaced on the pitch by Peter Crouch. Despite Owen's absence, England got the draw they needed to finish top of their group. The goals were scored by Joe Cole and Steven Gerrard.

Injury Update

The scan has confirmed that Michael Owen's knee injury is serious. He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. It is expected to take five months to heal. Michael Owen has flown home to England and will no longer take part in the World Cup in Germany.
