Day of the Tentacle Plot outline

Thirsty, Purple Tentacle decides to take a drink from the river, "I don't think you should drink that" proclaims Green Tentacle, "It looks bad for you!"

"Nonsense!" replies Purple Tentacle as he proceeds to take a drink, "I feel great!... smarter... more aggressive", suddenly a transformation takes place as Purple Tentacle sprouts arms... "I feel like I could... like I could... TAKE ON THE WORLD!"

There's a knock at the door of Bernard Bernoulli's house. Laverne answers it with Hoagie to discover that the "person" that was knocking was a hamster. Before Laverne has a chance to use the hamster for dissection lessons, Bernard comes in to explain that the Hamster belongs to "Weird" Ed Edison. The hamster is clutching a message from Bernard's old friend; Green Tentacle. Bernard reads it and discovers that Purple Tentacle has turned in to an evil genius and that Dr Fred plans to kill them both! "I thought I was free from Dr Fred and those crazy Edison's forever, but now I know; I must go back to the mansion!"

Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne arrive at the mansion and decide to split up to find Dr Fred and the tentacles. As Hoagie and Laverne go different ways, Bernard goes off in search of Dr Fred's secret laboratory.

In the meantime, Laverne and Hoagie bump in to each other again and come across Dr Fred; "I had to tie those buggers up in the basement" he proclaims when asked about the tentacles, "They made good pets, until one of them tried to take on the world, and enslave all humanity!". "It's a good thing you told us that" retorts Laverne "Bernard wants to set them free", "good job you're not that stupid!" replies Dr Fred.... "Did you say Bernard?!" Laverne and Hoagie follow him as he runs off to find Bernard"

Bernard finds the tentacles and releases them; "Okay, you're free to go!". "Thank you Bernard" says Green Tentacle. "Thank-you naïve human!" says Purple Tentacle as he heads off to continue his evil plans. Green Tentacle runs off to talk him out of it. Bernard is left to ponder the situation "What possible harm could one insane mutant tentacle do?"

The full horror of the situation is soon discovered by Dr. Fred. "Purple tentacle is free to use his evil mutant powers to take over the world and enslave all humanity.". "I'll have to turn off the Sludge-o-Matic and stop it's toxic mutagen from entering the river", "Isn't it a bit late for that asks Bernard. "Yes! That's why I'll have to do it yesterday.... to the time machine!"

Dr Fred introduces them to his time travelling invention, one creaky piece of equipment that looks like its made mainly from a rusty old car and a set of traffic lights attached to three separate time travelling portable toilets called "Chron-o-Johns".

"You must all go to increase the odds that one of you makes it there alive" declares Dr Fred. "Has anyone ever been hurt in this thing?" asks Bernard, "Of course not!" replies Dr Fred in a tone of distain, "I've never tried it with humans before!". The three lead characters all reluctantly get in to the Chron-o-Johns and begin their journey through time.

Everything appears to work fine.. "And they said imitation diamond wasn't good enough!" proclaims Dr Fred, as if fate has been tempted, the diamond that powers the time machine suddenly shatters and things immediately start to go wrong! Bernard's Chron-O-John reappears and Fred has to explain to him that Laverne has been transported 200 years in to the future where Purple Tentacle now controls the world and all humans are held captive as pets! Hoagie on the other hand has been transported backwards in time, 200 years to colonial times.

"Cheap mail order jewels!" screams Dr Fred, "I knew I should have bought a real diamond!", "All your buddies have to plug in their Chron-o-Johns", "Where's Hoagie going to find an electrical outlet 200 years in the past?" asks Bernard with a hint of despair". No need to worry, Dr. Fred has patented a super-battery invention; all Bernard needs now is to give the plans to Hoagie who can in turn give them to Dr Fred's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Red Edison. Fortunately, sending the plans back in time is the easy part of this job; each Chron-o-john is equipped with a time flux hydraulic vortex battery chamber which can be used to flush inanimate objects through time! The hard part is finding the battery plans in Edison's cluttered laboratory. Bernard is given his instructions by Dr. Fred...
