The sound effects in chaos are astoundingly appalling, the graphics are simply crap. The programming isn't astounding, in fact it's awful - the game is full of bugs! It is not a multi-level action game either. It's more like a board game and there's only one playing screen! If you go by this, then the game would be one of the worst ever.
However, there is one factor that I have left out and that is playability. This game is seriously addictive! There is enough strategy involved in this game to outclass even the biggest strategic games available today. It really puts deathmatch quake to the test. Timing your attack is critical, if there's one mistake in your planning then you could find yourself in deep trouble.
The game is a battle of wizards. Up to eight wizards are placed in an arena and they all have a variety of different spells in their armoury. The object is then to kill all of the other wizards using these spells to help you.
The spells come in many different types. Most of them are creature spells. When cast, a creature can be sent to attack another wizard or maybe another wizard's creatures. Some improve the strength of your wizard. You can create magic armour, magic weapons and even grow wings to make you fly. For those with less battle lust there is even a spell which will build you a castle to hide in!
Other spells include trees which will attack people who get too close. A particularly nasty spell is gooey blob. If successfully cast, a blob will appear in the arena. Over time it will spread, consuming everything in it's path. If it gets to an enemy wizard then their life is over!
It is hard to explain why this game is so fantastic. But the formula for the game is a big success. Despite all its other limitations, the gameplay shows through and it is gameplay that will never date. Despite being over 20 years old now, this game will never die.
